Papaver rhoeas ‘American Legion’ (common poppy, American Legion poppy) is an annual famed for its bright, papery, single red blooms with dark centers—an evocative, patriotic variety commonly used in memorial and cottage‑garden plantings. The species is native to Europe and western Asia and is widely naturalized in temperate regions.

Plant in full sun for best flowering; it tolerates light afternoon shade but blooms more sparsely in shade. Prefers well‑drained soil from sandy to loamy with average fertility—avoid heavy, waterlogged soils. Leaner soils often encourage sturdier stems and better flowering; amend very poor soils lightly with compost if needed.

Seeds need light to germinate, so surface‑sow or press lightly into a fine, moist seed mix rather than covering. Direct‑sow in early spring or autumn (autumn sowing gives natural cold stratification) or start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost and transplant carefully. Germination typically occurs in 7–21 days; a short cold period can improve uniformity. Poppies self‑sow readily where happy.

Plants usually reach about 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall with a spread of 6–12 inches (15–30 cm); space 6–12 inches apart. As an annual, it completes its life cycle in one season but often volunteers the following year.

‘American Legion’ is grown primarily as an ornamental for bold spring color and as a short‑term cut flower; the papery petals and distinctive seed pods also press and dry well for crafts and dried arrangements. Handle with care and avoid ingesting plant material.
