Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Daydream’ (Daydream cosmos) is an annual prized for soft pastel blooms—often blush, pale pinks, creams, and soft mauves—set above delicate, ferny foliage. Native to Mexico and widely naturalized, it provides airy, cottage‑garden color from midsummer until first frost and works well in mixed borders, meadows, and pollinator plantings.
Grow ‘Daydream’ in full sun for best flowering and sturdy habit; it tolerates light afternoon shade but will produce fewer blooms in shade. It prefers well‑drained soil from average loam to sandy mixes and performs well in leaner soils—avoid rich, high‑nitrogen conditions that encourage floppy growth. Water regularly during establishment, then allow moderate drought tolerance once plants are established.
Cosmos seed needs light to germinate, so surface‑sow or barely cover seeds. Sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost or start indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms; germination typically occurs in 7–14 days at warm temperatures. No cold stratification is required; succession sowing extends the bloom season.
Plants commonly reach 3–5 feet (90–150 cm) tall with a 1–2 foot (30–60 cm) spread—space about 12–18 inches apart to allow airflow and show off the feathery foliage. As an annual, ‘Daydream’ completes its life cycle in one season but may self‑sow in favorable sites.
‘Daydream’ is excellent as a long‑lasting cut flower for airy bouquets and arrangements, attracts bees and butterflies, and adds a soft, vintage palette to mixed borders and pollinator gardens.
