Viola Cornuta

Viola ‘Yellow Tiger Eye’ (a garden pansy/viola hybrid, commonly called Yellow Tiger Eye) is a compact, cool‑season ornamental valued for its bright yellow blooms often marked with fine darker veining and a tidy, mounding habit. Derived from garden pansy/viola breeding, it’s used for seasonal color in beds, borders, rockeries, and containers.

Grow ‘Yellow Tiger Eye’ in full sun to part shade — morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in hot climates to prolong bloom. It prefers fertile, well‑drained loam amended with compost and consistent moisture; avoid waterlogged or extremely dry soils. Moderate fertility encourages steady flowering without excessive foliage.

Seeds germinate best with light exposure, so surface‑sow or press seeds lightly into a fine, moist seed mix rather than burying deeply. Start indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost for spring planting or sow in early fall in mild climates; germination typically occurs in 7–14 days at cool to moderate temperatures. A short cool period can improve uniformity but is not required.

Plants form low mounds about 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) tall with a spread of 6–10 inches (15–25 cm); space roughly 6–10 inches apart for a full display. Often grown as a cool‑season annual or biennial (hardy roughly in USDA zones 6–9 depending on microclimate), ‘Yellow Tiger Eye’ is excellent for bedding, edging, and containers. Flowers are edible and make charming garnishes; they also press and dry reasonably well for crafts but are best enjoyed fresh in the garden.
