Painted Daisy
Chrysanthemum carinatum
Seeds per Package: 150
Tanacetum coccineum (Painted Daisy, also sold as Chrysanthemum coccineum or Pyrethrum) is a clump‑forming herbaceous perennial native to the Caucasus and parts of southeastern Europe. It’s grown for its long‑blooming, daisy‑like flowers in shades of rose, pink, magenta, and white above finely divided, aromatic foliage and is a favorite in cottage borders, mixed beds, and pollinator plantings.
Plant Painted Daisy in full sun for best flowering; it will tolerate light afternoon shade but blooms more prolifically in sun. It prefers well‑drained soil from sandy to loamy with average fertility—leaner soils encourage sturdier plants and more blooms, while rich, wet soils can cause lanky growth or crown rot. Incorporate some compost into very poor soils but avoid heavy feeding.
Seeds can be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct‑sown after danger of frost. Sow on the surface or press lightly into a fine, moist seed mix because light aids germination; expect emergence in 7–21 days. A short cold period can improve germination but isn’t strictly necessary. Transplants appreciate good airflow and moderate watering until established.
Mature plants typically reach 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall with a spread of about 12–18 inches (30–45 cm); space plants 12–18 inches apart to allow clump expansion and air circulation. Painted Daisy is excellent for cut flowers, and the blooms also press and dry reasonably well for crafts. It attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, making it an attractive and useful garden perennial.
