Zinnia elegans ‘Oklahoma Salmon’ (Oklahoma Salmon zinnia) is an annual ornamental bred for abundant, salmon‑to‑coral double blooms on a compact, uniform habit. Native to Mexico, Z. elegans cultivars like this one are staples for long‑season summer color in beds, borders, and containers.
Grow in full sun for best flowering and sturdy stems. It prefers well‑drained soil from average loam to sandy mixes and tolerates moderate fertility; avoid waterlogged sites and excess nitrogen, which can produce leggy plants. Regular watering during establishment helps, but mature plants are fairly drought tolerant.
Seeds germinate readily with warmth and light: surface‑sow or cover very lightly and keep the medium evenly moist. Start indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms or direct‑sow after danger of frost when soil has warmed; expect germination in 7–14 days. No cold stratification is required.
Plants typically reach about 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall with a similar spread—space plants roughly 8–12 inches apart for good airflow and a full display. As an annual it completes its life cycle in one season.
‘Oklahoma Salmon’ is excellent for fresh cutting—sturdy stems and showy double flowers make it a favorite for bouquets—and its blooms press and dry well for crafts and dried arrangements. It also attracts bees and butterflies, adding pollinator value to mixed plantings.
