Amaranthus cruentus 'Oeschberg' is an annual ornamental amaranth (sometimes grouped with red or tassel amaranths) prized for its striking deep‑red foliage and drooping tassel flowers. Amaranths are native to Central and South America but 'Oeschberg' is a cultivated variety used for bold color in summer borders and containers.

Grow it in full sun for best color and flowering; it prefers fertile, well‑drained soil but tolerates average garden loam. Regular moisture helps vigorous growth, though it won’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. A light side‑dressing of compost or balanced fertilizer at planting and again midseason encourages larger plants and fuller tassels.

Seeds are very small and benefit from warmth rather than cold. Sow indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost or direct‑sow after soil has warmed; seeds can be surface‑sown or covered very lightly and kept evenly moist. Germination commonly occurs in 5–14 days at warm temperatures; no cold stratification is needed.

'Oeschberg' typically reaches about 3–6 feet (0.9–1.8 m) tall with a 1–2 foot (30–60 cm) spread—space plants roughly 12–18 inches apart depending on desired density. As an annual it completes its life cycle in one season but self‑sowing can occur in favorable climates.

This variety is excellent for fresh cut flower use and is one of the best amaranths for drying; the tassels retain color and structure for long‑lasting dried arrangements. Young leaves are edible like spinach (varietal edibility varies), and the plant attracts pollinators, making it both ornamental and useful in mixed plantings.
