Bishops Children Dahlia
Dahlia x hybrida Dahlia variabilis
Seeds per Package: 50

Bishops Children Dahlia — Dahlia × pinnata (tuberous cultivar) — is a showy decorative dahlia prized for its abundant blooms and nearly black foliage, vibrant single-petaled flowers (red, orange, pink, yellow), and a mature height of 24–36 inches. and rich color that ranges from deep rose to lavender-tinged shades (color may vary by strain and season). As a tuberous perennial native to Mexico and Central America. Flowers open on sturdy stems and create a long-season display from mid-summer through the first frost, making this variety excellent for borders, mixed beds, and cut-flower use.

Plant established seedlings in sun for best flowering and strongest stems, in fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost or aged manure. Dahlias prefer consistent moisture but dislike standing water; provide even watering and ensure good drainage to reduce rot. Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and again midseason, avoiding high-nitrogen feeds that encourage foliage over blooms. Start tubers indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost for earlier blooms, or set tubers out after soil has warmed; if grown from seed, start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. In frost-free regions dahlias can remain in the ground year-round; in colder climates (below about USDA zone 8) lift and store tubers indoors over winter. Expect plants to reach roughly 2–5 feet (60–150 cm) tall with a 1–3 foot (30–90 cm) spread depending on pruning and staking—space plants about 18–36 inches apart. Deadhead regularly to extend bloom, and provide early staking or support for heavier-flowering stems.
