Papaver somniferum

Papaver somniferum ‘Black Swan’ (opium poppy, commonly called Black Swan poppy) is an annual to short‑lived biennial grown for its dramatic, deep‑near‑black to dark‑maroon bowl‑shaped flowers with contrasting centers and attractive glaucous foliage. P. somniferum is native to the Mediterranean and western Asia and has been widely cultivated for ornamental, culinary (poppy seeds), and historical uses; note legal restrictions on cultivation in some regions—check local laws before growing.
Plant ‘Black Swan’ in full sun for best flowering and sturdy habit. It prefers well‑drained soil from sandy to loamy with moderate fertility; overly rich, wet soils can cause lodging or reduced flowering. Incorporate some compost into poor soils but avoid heavy nitrogen that promotes lush foliage over blooms.
Seeds are tiny and need light to germinate, so surface‑sow or press lightly into a fine, moist seed mix rather than covering deeply. Direct‑sow in early spring or autumn where winters are cold (autumn sowing gives stronger early growth and natural stratification), or start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost and transplant carefully when seedlings are large enough to handle. Germination typically occurs in 7–21 days at cool to moderate temperatures; no special stratification is required, but cold exposure can improve uniformity.
Plants typically reach about 18–36 inches (45–90 cm) tall with a spread of 6–12 inches (15–30 cm); space 8–12 inches apart to allow airflow and room for seed‑pod development. ‘Black Swan’ produces eye‑catching blooms ideal for garden display and is also used as a short‑term cut flower. The large, papery petals press and dry well for botanical crafts, and the ornamental seed pods add interest to dried arrangements. Important: all parts of P. somniferum contain alkaloids —do not ingest plant material, and handle seeds/pods in accordance with local regulations.
