Borago officinalis (borage, common borage) is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean, grown for its rough, cucumber‑scented foliage and star‑shaped blue flowers (also available in white forms). It naturalizes readily and is often used in cottage, herb, and pollinator gardens.

Plant borage in full sun to part shade; it tolerates some afternoon shade in hot climates. It prefers well‑drained soil from sandy to loamy with average fertility—too rich soil can produce excessive leafy growth. Provide regular moisture while establishing but avoid waterlogged conditions.

Sow seed on or just below the surface of a fine, moist seed mix because light aids germination; seeds typically sprout in 7–14 days at warm temperatures. You can direct‑sow after the danger of frost or start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. Borage transplants poorly once large, so direct sowing is often easiest. No cold stratification is required.

Plants reach about 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall with a similar spread—space plants roughly 12–18 inches apart. Borage attracts bees and other pollinators, the young leaves are edible with a mild cucumber flavor, and the flowers make charming edible garnishes. Flowers and foliage are best used fresh; borage can be included in casual cut bouquets and presses reasonably well for small crafts, but it’s not commonly used as a long‑lasting dried specimen.
