Alcea rosea ‘Charter’s Double White’ (double white hollyhock) is an eye‑catching biennial to short‑lived perennial prized for its tall spires of fully double, snow‑white rosettes and classic mallow foliage. Native to temperate Eurasia, hollyhocks are traditional cottage‑garden plants used for dramatic vertical accents along fences, walls, and the back of borders.

Plant in full sun for best flowering, although it will tolerate light afternoon shade. It prefers rich, well‑drained garden soil with consistent moisture and moderate fertility; amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage. Avoid waterlogged sites. Because flower spikes can be top‑heavy, provide staking or wind protection and maintain good spacing to reduce flopping and disease pressure.

Seeds can be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct‑sown in spring once danger of frost has passed. Sow just under a thin layer of soil or on the surface and keep the mix evenly moist; seeds usually germinate in 7–21 days. Cold stratification is not required, though autumn sowing or exposure to a cool period often yields sturdier plants. Thin or transplant seedlings to maintain airflow and help prevent rust and mildew.

‘Charter’s Double White’ typically reaches 4–8 feet (1.2–2.4 m) tall with a spread of about 1–2 feet (30–60 cm); space plants 18–24 inches apart. It’s primarily grown as an ornamental for bold vertical color and pollinator attraction; blooms can be used for short‑term cut arrangements but are most striking in the garden. Hardy generally in USDA zones 3–8.
