Lacey Blue Didiscus
Didiscus Caeruleus
Seeds per Package: About 25
Didiscus caeruleus (sold as Lacey Blue Didiscus) is a tender perennial native to eastern Australia, most often grown as an annual in cooler climates. It produces masses of small, star‑shaped sky‑to‑lace‑blue flowers above a low, mounding habit and is prized for bedding, edging, and container color.
Plant Lacey Blue in full sun to part shade — in hot regions it appreciates afternoon shade to prevent stress and faded blooms. It prefers fertile, well‑drained soil with consistent moisture; a loamy or sandy loam amended with compost works well. Avoid waterlogged sites and heavy clay without amendment, which can lead to crown rot.
Start seed indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct‑sow after danger of frost. Seeds benefit from light, so surface‑sow or press lightly into a fine, moist seed mix rather than covering deeply; germination usually occurs in 7–21 days at moderate temperatures. No cold stratification is required. Transplants appreciate regular watering until established.
Plants typically reach about 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall with a spread of 12–18 inches (30–45 cm); space plants 8–12 inches apart for a full carpeted effect. In mild, frost‑free climates it can act as a perennial groundcover (USDA zones ~9–11); elsewhere it’s grown as an annual.
Lacey Blue is excellent for mass displays, containers, and borders and makes attractive, delicate cut posies for small arrangements. It attracts pollinators and pairs well with other cool‑season bedding plants.
