Xerochrysum bracteatum ‘Cranberry Rose’ (strawflower, also sold as Helichrysum bracteatum) is a tender perennial often grown as an annual in most climates, prized for its papery, long‑lasting cranberry‑to‑rose colored bracts and daisy‑like flower centers. Native to Australia, this cultivar brings reliable summer–fall color and excellent longevity for fresh and dried displays.
Grow ‘Cranberry Rose’ in full sun for best flowering and compact habit; it tolerates light afternoon shade but will produce fewer blooms. It prefers well‑drained soil from sandy to loamy with average fertility—excellent drainage is essential to prevent crown rot. Moderate moisture during establishment is helpful, but mature plants tolerate dry conditions better than wet, heavy soils. A light application of compost at planting and occasional balanced fertilizing will support continuous bloom without promoting floppy growth.
Seeds need light for best germination, so surface‑sow or press them lightly into a fine, moist seed mix rather than covering deeply. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms, or direct‑sow after soils have warmed; germination typically occurs in 7–14 days at warm temperatures. No cold stratification is required. Transplants prefer gentle handling—strawflowers have delicate roots—and benefit from good airflow and full sun once planted out.
Mature plants commonly reach about 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall with a spread of 12–18 inches (30–45 cm); space plants 10–18 inches apart depending on desired density. ‘Cranberry Rose’ is outstanding as a fresh cut flower and one of the best species for drying—bracts retain color and shape for long‑lasting dried arrangements, wreaths, and crafts. It also attracts pollinators and makes a colorful addition to borders, cottage gardens, and containers.
