Lathyrus Odoratus
Sweet Pea "Old Spice,Cupani"
Seeds per Package: 15

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Old Spice’ (Cupani sweet pea) is a classic, highly fragrant annual climber—one of the oldest and most beloved sweet pea types—renowned for its rich, spicy perfume and typically bi‑colored blooms. Originating from Mediterranean stock (Italy/Sicily), ‘Old Spice’ is a heritage variety prized in cottage, cutting, and fragrance gardens.

Plant Cupani sweet peas in full sun for best flowering and scent; in hot regions provide afternoon shade to extend bloom. They prefer fertile, well‑drained soil amended with compost for steady moisture and nutrients—avoid waterlogged conditions. Provide sturdy support (trellis, netting, canes) at planting so vines can climb and air can circulate.

Seeds can be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or sown directly outdoors in cool soil as soon as it can be worked. Pre‑soaking or nicking (scarification) seeds overnight speeds germination and improves uniformity; expect emergence in 7–14 days. Fall sowing in mild climates produces strong early growth and robust plants the following season.

‘Old Spice’ is vigorous, commonly reaching 5–8 feet (1.5–2.5 m) tall with a narrow spread—space plants about 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) apart along supports. As an annual it completes its life cycle in one season but rewards frequent cutting with prolonged bloom. Sweet peas are outstanding cut flowers prized for fragrance and long stems and attract pollinators while in bloom.
