Lathyrus Odoratus
Sweet Pea "America"
Seeds per Package: 10
Lathyrus odoratus ‘America’ (Sweet Pea) is a classic, highly fragrant annual climber prized for large, richly colored blooms and long stems. Bred from Mediterranean stock and developed into many garden cultivars, ‘America’ is valued in cottage and cutting gardens for its robust flowering and scent.
Plant sweet peas in full sun for best bloom and fragrance; in hot climates provide some afternoon shade to prolong flowering. They prefer fertile, well‑drained soil amended with compost for steady moisture and nutrients. Avoid waterlogged sites. Provide sturdy support—netting, trellis, or canes—at planting so vines can climb.
Seeds can be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or sown directly outdoors in cool soil as soon as it can be worked in spring. Scarify or soak seeds overnight to speed germination; they typically emerge in 7–14 days. No cold stratification is required, though fall sowing in mild climates can produce strong early growth.
‘America’ is vigorous, often reaching 5–8 feet (1.5–2.5 m) tall with a narrow spread—space plants 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) apart along supports to allow room for climbing. As an annual it completes its life cycle in one season but rewards regular cutting with prolonged bloom.
Sweet peas are exceptional cut flowers, prized for fragrance and long stems; they also attract pollinators but are not typically used for drying or pressing.
