Cosmos ‘Rubenza’ Seeds – 50 Seeds
Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Rubenza’ (Rubenza cosmos) is an annual garden favorite noted for its rich, deep‑rose to raspberry‑red, semi‑double to double blooms and airy, ferny foliage. Native to Mexico and naturalized across many temperate regions, cosmos bring cottage‑garden charm and season‑long color from midsummer to first light frosts.
Plant Rubenza in full sun for best flowering and a sturdy, open habit; it tolerates light afternoon shade but will produce fewer blooms. It prefers well‑drained soil from average loam to sandy mixes and performs well in leaner soils—rich, high‑nitrogen beds can yield lanky plants and fewer flowers. Regular watering during establishment helps, but mature plants are drought‑tolerant.
Seeds are very easy: sow directly outdoors after danger of frost when the soil is warm, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms. Sow on the surface or barely cover—cosmos seed needs light for best germination and typically emerges in 7–14 days at warm temperatures. No cold stratification is required.
Plants commonly reach 3–5 feet (90–150 cm) tall with a 1–2 foot (30–60 cm) spread—space plants about 12–18 inches apart to allow airflow and showcase the feathery foliage. As an annual, Rubenza completes its season in one year but self‑sowing can occur in favorable sites.
Rubenza is excellent as a long‑lasting cut flower with lightweight stems ideal for airy bouquets, and it also attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. It’s not typically used for drying or pressing, but its bold fresh blooms and extended bloom period make it a standout in mixed borders, prairie plugs, and pollinator gardens.
