Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Kirro’ (Kirro cosmos) is an annual garden favorite known for its rich, deep magenta to raspberry‑rose semi‑double blooms set above fine, ferny foliage. Native to Mexico and widely naturalized, this cultivar offers long‑season color from midsummer to first frost and works well in cottage borders, cut‑flower plots, and pollinator mixes.

Plant ‘Kirro’ in full sun for the best bloom and open habit; it will tolerate light afternoon shade but flowers less in shade. It prefers well‑drained soil from average loam to sandy mixes and often performs better in leaner soils—avoid heavy, high‑nitrogen fertilizer that encourages foliage at the expense of flowers. Water regularly while establishing, then allow moderate drought tolerance once plants are mature.

Cosmos seed needs light to germinate, so surface‑sow or barely cover seeds. Sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost when soil has warmed, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost for an earlier display; germination typically occurs in 7–14 days at warm temperatures. No cold stratification is required, and succession sowing every few weeks extends the bloom season.

Plants typically reach 3–5 feet (90–150 cm) tall with a 1–2 foot (30–60 cm) spread—space plants about 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart to allow airflow and showcase the feathery foliage. As an annual, ‘Kirro’ completes its lifecycle in one season but may self‑sow in favorable sites.

‘Kirro’ is excellent as a long‑lasting cut flower for airy bouquets and arrangements, attracts bees and butterflies, and adds bold, romantic color to mixed borders, meadows, and pollinator plantings.
