Petunia grandiflora ‘Sophisticated Black’ (grandiflora petunia) is a showy, tender perennial typically grown as an annual in most climates, prized for its large, velvety near‑black blooms and vigorous, mounding habit. Bred from South American Petunia species, grandifloras are favorites for dramatic, late‑spring through fall color in beds, containers, and hanging baskets.
Grow ‘Sophisticated Black’ in full sun for best flowering and compact form; it will tolerate part shade but blooms more sparingly. Plant in fertile, well‑drained garden soil or potting mix amended with compost; consistent moisture and regular feeding (balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks) promote steady blooms—avoid waterlogged conditions.
Seeds are very small and require light for best germination: surface‑sow on a fine, moist seed mix and do not cover. Start indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost at warm (70–75°F / 21–24°C) temperatures; expect germination in 7–14 days. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost; no cold stratification is needed.
‘Sophisticated Black’ typically grows about 8–14 inches (20–35 cm) tall with a 12–18 inch (30–45 cm) spread—space plants 10–18 inches apart depending on desired coverage. It’s excellent for bedding, containers, and mixed hanging displays; flowers are best used fresh (short vase life) and attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees.
